Chemistry Concepts
The Chemistry Concepts Notebook is designed not to be a complete “self contained” unit of work, but to illustrate some ways that the Notebook software can be utilized in the teaching of senior Chemistry. There are five main sections to the Notebook.

1.       The History of the development of Atomic Theory is common to many Year 11 Chemistry courses. It is a topic that relies heavily on the recall of facts. The Notebook contains pages that utilize

·         Timeline reveal,

·         Keyword match and

·         Sentence   Arrange

Using these pages will facilitate the recall of the sequence of key contributions by various Scientists towards our modern day understanding of the Structure of the Atom.

2.       Balancing Chemical equations is a key skill in any Chemistry course and within the Notebook file is a page that utilizes the “Checker box” to confirm correct Coefficients. Just a different way to reinforce this concept.

3.       Ionic and Covalent Bonding are also key concepts in most Year 11 Chemistry courses. The Notebook file contains a page that gives students an opportunity to drag valence electrons from one atom to another, and so satisfy the Octet rule.  A file on Covalent bonding (downloaded from the SMART resource page) has been included as it presents Covalent bonding in a different way to what is typically used in Australian texts.

4.       A Flash File showing the Condensation reaction between two Amino Acids is included to illustrate the wealth of such files that are available on the web. If a teacher Googles  “<topic> flash file”,(or  “<topic>applet” ) it is likely that they will find something worth using. Simply then right click on the object and Save As (or save target as)  - the Flash file will get saved into My Documents/my pictures (by default) and can then be included in a Notebook file by going to the Insert/picture File  from the Notebook dropdown menu.

5.       A Senteo Quiz that asks questions from all of the above topics is also included in the Notebook file. (Again more of an illustration of the types of questions that can be written within Senteo, rather than being an exhaustive Summative assessment.
